Creating a Healthy Relationship with Rest Days
Written by Celeste Mayor-Hollins
We’ve all been there—you’re staying consistent with your workouts, showing up to classes, and feeling good. Then a rest day comes around, and suddenly it feels like you’re slacking off or losing momentum. The truth is, rest isn’t the opposite of progress—it’s what makes progress possible. The results you’re working so hard for actually happen between workouts, not just during them. Rest gives your body and mind the time they need to recover, rebuild, and grow.
Don’t feel guilty
It’s totally normal to feel a little guilty about slowing down, but rest isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a key part of any healthy fitness routine. Learning to honour your rest days is just as important as pushing yourself during workouts. Taking a break doesn’t make you lazy, it’s how you stay healthy, balanced, and consistent.
Listen to your body
It’s great to have a balanced workout routine but rest days are just as important. They’re not optional, they’re essential. Listen to your body, soreness, fatigue, irritability, or even a sudden drop in motivation aren’t signs to push harder. They’re gentle reminders that it’s time to slow down. Listening to those signals helps you avoid burnout, lowers the risk of injury, and allows you to return to your workouts feeling stronger, more energised, and ready to go.
Active rest days
Rest days don’t always mean doing no movement. And while there’s nothing wrong with spending a day lounging on the sofa (sometimes that’s exactly what you need!), it can also help to plan your rest days with intention—just like you do your workouts. This helps them become a conscious part of your routine, not something that happens only when you’ve hit a wall.
Here are a few ideas for your next rest day:
• Do a short mobility or yoga session
• Go for a gentle walk outdoors
• Hydrate, stretch, and prioritise a good night’s sleep
Remember. rest days are just as important as your workouts. They give your body the time it needs to recover and grow stronger, and your mind the space to reconnect with why you move in the first place. So, the next time you take a day off, remember: you’re not falling behind—you’re fuelling your next step forward.
